I know, another XMLHttpRequest link, and I still haven't actually used any of the ones I've already found. This is a nice step-by-step primer though, so if you've been intrigued by some of the other links but not understood it, this could be a good first

Well, darn me if that tutorial isn't exactly what I've been looking for! I'll have to read over it more carefully, but, from a quick skim-read, it looks as though that's everything I need for my online family tree navigation. The PHP will still decide what data to send, and do a bit of parsing, and the JS will deal with fetching the data and putting it in the right place on the page. Excellent!
