Interesting Things on the Internet: May 26th Edition
- How ‘competitiveness’ became one of the great unquestioned virtues of contemporary culture. A good analysis of how judging everything in purely economic terms has become pervasive. Would be nice if we can find a way to reverse that.
- Everything is Broken by Quinn Norton. "There is certainly a limit to what an organized movement of people who share a mutual dream can do, but we haven’t found it yet."
- BPF - the forgotten bytecode. A look inside how
tcpdump
works. Particularly interesting for protocol engineers like myself :-) - Everyone is totally just winging it, all the time. In fact, I'm probably winging it just now as you read this.
- Mammon's Kingdom: An Essay on Britain, Now by David Marquand – review. Yet more analysis of what's wrong with society, without a particularly clear idea of what to do next. Not sure I agree with the analysis that everyone is too individualistic these days, I think Hugh MacLeod's the market for something to believe in is infinite has a lot to be said for it.
